Prevost Pipes (Pete Prevost)

Prevost Pipes is the line of handmade pipes American maker Pete Prevost produces under his own name. Raised in Bakersfield, California, Prevost worked for years as a musician before settling in Tennessee, where he turned pipe making first into a side pursuit and then into his primary trade. Today he both produces individual pieces bearing his own signature and serves as president of the BriarWorks workshop.

Coming to the Bench

By the records, Prevost's first pipe came from a ready-made kit he bought in 2008; learning the craft accelerated after this trial piece. He completed his training without tying himself to a single workshop, working alongside several experienced American makers: Jody Davis, Bruce Weaver, and Todd Johnson are the names cited for his technical development. This period spent at different benches made it easier for the maker to build a line comfortable with classic proportions while remaining open to freehand shapes.

Prevost, who kept up pipe making intermittently during his years in music, shifted his focus entirely to the bench in the early 2010s. His collaborative work with Johnson also laid the groundwork for the larger-scale workshop the two would later found together.

BriarWorks and Two Identities

In 2013 Prevost was among the founders of BriarWorks in Nashville, alongside Todd Johnson. Involved at every stage — from design to production, from the company's day-to-day management to sales — the maker was made company president in 2016. According to records, the workshop's production moved to Columbia, Tennessee, in 2018. For this reason the Prevost name appears in the community in two distinct contexts: as the manager of an institution that blends serial production with handwork, and as a craftsman making pipes one by one under his own name. That his personal output has stayed limited is largely the result of this dual load.

Style and Stamps

Prevost's personal output is known for its stocky, short proportions. Acorn, pot, and canted egg shapes along with freehand interpretations are recurring themes; the classic billiard shape also has a place in his repertoire. Spacers cut from exotic hardwoods are frequently seen on briar bodies. For the stem, the maker's clear preference runs to brightly colored, marbled materials; it is reported that some of these stems are made of bakelite. This color contrast against dark briar is considered the leading detail that makes Prevost pipes recognizable at a distance.

A limited number of pieces the maker judges by his own standards to be top-tier are said to be set apart with a "BELL" stamp. According to reports, pipes bearing this stamp are accompanied by a number showing the count of BELL-grade pieces made up to that point. The stamp's rare use is the reason it is considered a distinguishing mark among collectors.
