Rattray's

Rattray's is a brand that grew out of a Scottish tobacconist's shop founded in Perth in the early 20th century, first known for its blends. After the Perth business closed in 1981 the brand passed into the orbit of Germany's Kohlhase & Kopp, and its pipes began to be made on contract at workshops in various countries.

Rattray's is a brand rooted in a tobacconist's shop in Perth, Scotland, known first for its blends and, over time, also recognized for its pipes. The brand's founder, Charles Rattray, never made a pipe of his own; the pipes bearing his name were commissioned from other workshops, an arrangement that continues today, which is why Rattray's is seen less as a factory than as a name and a taste line.

The Perth Shop

By the records, Charles Rattray was born in 1880 and raised in Dundee, where the tobacco trade was strong; it was there that he also learned blending. In 1903, at twenty-three, he moved to Perth and began working at a tobacconist's shop on the city's main street. He bought the same shop in 1911 and put his own name on it. Sources sometimes use 1903 and 1911 interchangeably; the first is the date he arrived in Perth, the second the year the business truly came to be known under the Rattray name.

Like most tobacconists of the period, Rattray did not just sell ready-made tobacco; he blended his own at the back of the shop. Over time this became the shop's true identity. His signature Scottish-style blends were developed on a line balancing heavy Latakia and oriental tobaccos against Virginia; within the community Rattray is counted among the names who brought this style to maturity. Some of the blend names were carried forward to later generations through the brand.

Changes of Ownership

Charles Rattray died in 1964; his son, who bore the same name, took over the business and ran it until his retirement in 1980. The Perth shop closed after that, reportedly in 1981. With the son's death in 1984, the rights to the brand name and original recipes passed to his daughters. Some of the blends, meanwhile, had already been made at other producers' facilities as early as the 1970s. In the following stage the German tobacco firm Kohlhase & Kopp first became the German importer of Rattray's products, then acquired the brand name and recipes outright. The exact date of this transfer is not documented; sources point to a window between the late 1980s and 1990. In this way a brand of Scottish origin became a name whose production had moved to continental Europe.

The Pipes

The name behind carrying the brand's pipe side to its current line is Oliver Kopp. Rattray's-stamped pipes do not come from a single factory; orders are distributed among established workshops. On the French side, Chacom and Butz-Choquin from the Saint-Claude region are counted among these names, and on the Italian side, Brebbia and Gigi. According to reports, L'Anatra is also included on the list; meerschaum models, meanwhile, are commissioned from the Altınay workshop, which works with Eskişehir stone.

This scattered production arrangement allows a wide range of classic English shapes to be gathered under a single brand. Series names are often borrowed from the brand's tobacco blends, so the pipe and tobacco catalogs mirror each other. While the main material is briar, the now-discontinued Bog Oak series used oak darkened over centuries in a bog; this material is known in the community as bog oak. The catalog also includes surface finishes ranging from smooth polish to sandblast.
