Reum Pipes (Sean Reum)

Reum Pipes is the American handmade pipe brand Sean Reum produces alone at his bench in Northwest Montana. Reum's entry into the craft did not follow a classic apprenticeship line: he came to the trade repairing old straight razors, and it was around that work that he also met the pipe.

A Self-Built Bench

Encountering pipe-smoking users on a forum for razor enthusiasts first drew Reum to smoking a pipe, then to the question of how a pipe was made. His first attempts used ready-made carving kits. Since he had no equipment specific to pipe making on hand, he worked with the tools he used for repair work, and his technique developed only as far as that set of tools allowed. He filled in the gaps through online resources and correspondence with other makers. His first pipes appeared in 2013; by the records he made the work full-time in 2017. This self-taught trajectory is a familiar pattern of the American handmade pipe scene as it took shape after the 2000s.

Formal Language

Reum's designs draw on the legacy of the Danish school. Horn or ebonite bands, flared stem ends, and bowl-shank pairings at unusual proportions appear even in his early work. Alongside this he also takes his own approach to archetypes that became classic after Denmark — wide-shanked bulldogs, acorns, eggs, and shields. The final shape is often determined by the block itself; the grain flow of the briar narrows down where and to what degree the bowl will sit. He is unexpectedly productive for a one-man workshop; he does not go into detail about the methods that make this pace possible.

Surface and Material

He has tried different approaches to surface finish over time. In the late 2010s he was known for a mixed finish combining sandblasting with rustication; in sources this finish is referred to as Chipblast. In later years he leaned toward full or partial sandblasting and smooth-polished surfaces. A soft-textured finish he achieves by varying the depth of the sandblast is, in the same sources, called Eggshell; how widely these names have taken hold outside the workshop is unclear. His main materials are briar and ebonite; he is said to turn occasionally to olive wood and bog oak as well. He makes acrylic stems only on request.

A Joint Line

The partnership he formed in early 2022 with California-based Chris Morgan produced the Workshop line in the Morgan Pipes catalog. Body work is split between the two benches; stems, rather than being hand-shaped, are prepared from milled lucite rod. The line's aim is to bring the making quality of a top-tier pipe together in a single series that reaches a wider audience. The two makers have also co-hosted a podcast called Beyond the Pipe since 2021.
