• Humidor Pipes — the name given to the handmade pipes of a Romanian maker working alone, known as Bogdan. Born in 1968, the maker says he pursues pipe making as a passion rather than a livelihood; production accordingly runs to between one and four pipes a month. The workshop's beginnings date to 2008: the first attempt was made on a ready-drilled briar block, and in later years blocks were sourced from Italy, Greece, and Spain. Drilling and turning are carried out on a modified Sherline lathe. Mouthpieces are hand-shaped from acrylic or vulcanite rod; inlays on the shank and mouthpiece make use of exotic woods as well as silver and copper. The surface is finished, after sanding, with stain, carnauba wax, and shellac.
