Ron Powell is an American hand maker who produces pipes under the signature RDPipes. The signature arises from the maker's initials, R.D., merging with the word "pipes" on a shared "P"; in the community it is most often read as "RD Pipes." This name became the identity of roughly a decade of limited but shape- and material-varied production. Powell arrived at the bench not through a classic apprenticeship but through collecting and then repair, in that order.

The Road to the Bench

By the maker's own account, more than twenty years of local and long-haul trucking left him with lasting back problems, which prevented him from continuing his old interest in handwork with heavy materials. The pipe stands out within this constraint as an object light enough to work with: first came collecting, then the repair of worn pipes. According to Powell's account, he joined an online discussion forum for pipe makers in 2013, completed his first pipe using knowledge gathered from posts there, and made production a lasting pursuit. Such late, self-directed beginnings are a typical result of the online flow of information that has made possible the worldwide spread of briar makers.

Style and Craftsmanship

It is difficult to tie RDPipes pipes to a single school. In texts introducing the maker's work, the style is described as a blend moving between Italian and Danish lines, occasionally returning to classic English proportions. Powell has tried both simple and ambitious shapes, using bamboo shanks, exotic wood rings, acrylic, and silver alongside sandblasted and smooth surfaces. He states that he uses Mediterranean-origin briar for the bodies and chooses, as far as possible, the highest-quality rod material for the mouthpieces.

In the maker's own description, the center of gravity of the work lies not in appearance but in engineering. The smoke channel in the shank is drilled at 9/64 inch (about 3.6 mm) and continues, narrowing, through the mouthpiece. Mouthpieces are not bought ready-made but hand-cut from vulcanite rod; the bite zone is reduced to a thickness of 3/32 inch (about 2.4 mm) to sit comfortably between the teeth. The polishing of the airway inside the mouthpiece is justified on grounds of ease of cleaning and airflow. These dimension-driven choices exemplify why mouthpiece craftsmanship is considered decisive in a handmade pipe; much of the part of the pipe-making process invisible from the outside consists of decisions of this kind.

The End of Production

According to records, Powell completed his last pipe on 15 March 2022 and gave up pipe making. No new production is being made under the RDPipes name; the maker's work can now only be followed through collections. Powell was also a guest on a pipe interview program, where he described his approach to production; this recording is one of the few sources offering firsthand information about him. His home state and city are not reliably documented and are therefore not given here.
