Rosengren is the name of the pipe workshop that Jonas Rosengren (b. 1972) runs single-handedly in the city of Halmstad on Sweden's west coast. The brand rests not on a factory history but directly on the name of a single craftsman; in this respect it is counted among the generation of small Scandinavian pipe workshops that expanded in the 2000s. Production is limited in number, and every pipe comes from the same hand from start to finish; the brand is therefore known not for series model lines but for individually made pieces.
Making the Pipes and Their Distinguishing Traits
Bodies are cut from Mediterranean-origin briar. Mouthpieces are not bought ready-made; vulcanite rod is hand-cut and shaped. Two basic surface treatments are seen: smooth polish and sandblasting. Examples combining both on a single pipe are also on record. At the transition zone between the shank and mouthpiece, rings and ornamental pieces made from horn, bamboo, or wood other than briar may be used.
The stamp includes the maker's initials and country of production; in collector records this stamp is most often read as "JR Sweden." Maker promotional materials state that annual production runs to about fifty pipes. Besides pipes, Rosengren also produces complementary pieces such as ashtrays, pipe stands, and tampers, from local wood species. His continuing to teach woodworking is cited as the main reason the workshop remains a sideline in scale.
From Carpentry to the Bench
Several generations of carpenters are found in Rosengren's family, and he himself has worked with wood since childhood. After working in various trades, he turned to teaching woodworking in 2004. The decisive pursuit in his move to pipes was knife making: meeting knife maker Börje Thelberg, who also wanted to make pipes, steered Rosengren toward the craft. According to a promotional piece by the Swedish Pipe Club, he acquired his first lathe in 2006; the workshop becoming operational and the first pipes appearing came only in 2010.
Sweden's Network of Workshops
Rosengren's learning process rests heavily on visits to fellow makers. Lars-Göran Markunger, known as "Gurra," who lives in the same city, along with Ronny Thunér, Bengt Carlson, the pair Vollmer & Nilsson, and the Geiger Pipes workshop, all guided him both technically and in sourcing tools and materials. This community, open to sharing knowledge, is cited as an example of the arrangement in Sweden by which independently working makers train one another.
According to a Pipedia record, Rosengren attended the Chicago pipe show in May 2012; this information has not been confirmed by an independent source. The workshop still maintains its one-man scale today.
