S. Bang

S. Bang was a Danish pipe workshop opened in Copenhagen in 1968 and closed in 2019. The brand takes its name from its founder, Svend Bang, but the reputation the workshop earned belongs to Per Hansen and Ulf Noltensmeier, who shared the same bench for nearly half a century. By choosing to make only a small number of pipes each year and giving each one the time it needed, S. Bang became one of the handful of workshops regarded as standing at the very top of the Danish school tradition.

From Tobacco Counter to Pipe Bench

Svend Bang's trade was not carving but tobacco retailing. During his years at the venerable Copenhagen tobacconist W. Ø. Larsen, he built up blending knowledge and took on responsibility for setting up a pipe workshop attached to the shop. This experience gave him a ready-made layout when he opened his own shop in 1968: a sales area at the front, a workroom at the back. At first the workroom handled only repairs, yet what Bang wanted was pipes bearing his own name. To that end he hired one master after another; because most left within a short time, the staff never quite settled. Among the names recorded are Peter Rafn and Ivan Holst Nielsen.

Hansen and Noltensmeier

The first master to stay was Per Hansen, who moved to Bang's side in 1970 after a brief stint at the Preben Holm workshop. Ulf Noltensmeier, of German origin, whom he met there, joined the same team a year later. Both insisted on hand-crafting every stage and on selecting only the finest briar. This stance initially created friction with their employer: Bang had been impressed by the production volumes that large Danish workshops reached in that era, and found hand-cut stems too time-consuming. The dispute was settled in the masters' favor; as demand grew, the workshop moved in 1976 to a larger space north of Copenhagen, where it remained until it closed.

When Svend Bang retired in 1984, he handed the business to these two masters; he is recorded as having died in 1993. Hansen and Noltensmeier kept the brand name exactly as it was, changing only the city line on the stamp: the English "COPENHAGEN" gave way to the Danish "KOBENHAVN." Today, whether an S. Bang pipe predates or postdates the handover is read first from this line.

The Method at the Bench

There was no division of labor in the workshop; each master carried his own pipe from the first cut to the final polish, including the silver bands the brand is known for. The one exception was sandblasting: Per Hansen took the bowls set aside for this treatment to the Stanwell factory and operated the machine there himself. On the stem side, too, one preference never changed — black vulcanite was hand-cut and shaped. The two-stage staining applied to bring out the grain behaved differently on every block, so no two bodies could ever be identical.

The stamp indicating quality tier was used on pipes sent to Europe. According to accounts, the series opened at the bottom with black sandblast and light sandblast, ran with numbers from 5 to 9, and closed with the letters A, B and C; the D stamp is very rarely seen. Pipes bound for America carried, instead of a tier, the year, a sequence number, and the master's initials. This number has nothing to do with quality — it simply gives the master's production order within that year.

Closure

Per Hansen and Ulf Noltensmeier announced their retirement in the autumn of 2019. As no name was put forward to carry the brand on, the workshop closed as well. One small point of debate remains: the Löfberg pipes Svend Bang made himself, naming them after his wife's maiden name. According to the account, these pipes were forgotten in the German distributor's warehouse in the late 1970s, only to resurface in 2005.
