S&R Pipes (Stephen and Roswitha Anderson)

S&R Pipes is a handmade briar pipe bench in the United States founded by the couple Stephen and Roswitha Anderson, also seen on some pipes under the name S&R Woodcrafters. The two letters in the brand name come from the initials of the two founders' names, which is why S&R is better understood as the stamp of a partnership than the signature of a single maker.

From Fairground Table to Workshop

The Andersons began carving pipes in the 1960s. In this early period the bench had no fixed address; the pipes produced reached buyers directly from the makers' own table at pipe shows and craft fairs across America and Europe. The Shop in Columbus

In 1977 the couple settled into a red-brick building on Main Street in Columbus and opened the tobacco shop Pipes & Pleasures there. The same building served as both sales floor and workshop: carving continued in the back section while the front was given over to customers. The shelves held S&R-stamped pipes alongside products from well-known makers such as Dunhill, Charatan and Savinelli.

With the cigar boom of the 1990s the building was reorganized; a large humidor room and a lounge for customers were added. To make room, the pipe workshop was moved out of the shop to the couple's farm. Production and retail, having shared the same roof for about fifteen years, thus parted ways again.

Production and Recognition

S&R pipes are not mass-produced; they are briar pieces shaped by hand one at a time, and some examples carry the S&R Woodcrafters stamp. The workshop is also recorded as having a sub-brand called Yard Pipes.

The Andersons' work was featured in period publications such as Pipes and Tobaccos and PipeSmoker; some examples reportedly entered museum collections in Europe and America. According to the record, the couple were also the first American pipe makers admitted to the association formed by the masters of Saint-Claude, the town where briar pipe making grew into a worldwide industry. This claim rests largely on the brand's own promotional material and should not be regarded as confirmed by an independent record of the association.

Stephen Anderson passed away in March 2009. Roswitha Anderson continued both the pipe making and the running of the shop with a few assistants. Today S&R-stamped pipes are found mostly circulating in the secondhand collector market; the brand is remembered as one of the examples of an American family bench that managed to build its own storefront.
