Şahin Pipo

Şahin Pipo, based in Istanbul's Eminönü district, is the best-known of the brands carrying on the mass production of briar pipes in Türkiye. The firm, which began with pipe distribution and wholesale, later set up its own manufacturing and became the country's leading address for domestic briar production. Its activity has not been limited to pipes alone: producing and distributing the accessories used by pipe and cigar smokers has also become a branch of the business.

Founding and Company Line

In its own materials, the firm dates its founding to 1982 and to the partnership of Nevzat and Ahmet Şahin; this year is also the one that stands out in the brand's corporate identity. An older company text collected on Pipedia, however, gives the start as 1980 and also names Bekir Şahin among the partners. The two dates need not contradict each other: according to the account, wholesale pipe trading was already under way in the very early 1980s, with the manufacturing company founded afterward. The exact makeup of the founding team has not been settled by independent records.

By the firm's own statement, pipe manufacturing in Europe was studied firsthand, and the knowledge gained was carried into the model range. The same statement notes that part of production is exported to seven countries; this figure has not been confirmed by independent sources.

Material and Construction

The bowls of Şahin pipes are worked from briar, the material taken from the root burl of the tree heath (Erica arborea) that grows across the Mediterranean basin. In the Turkish market this material is commonly called "gül kökü" (rose root); the name has no botanical connection to the rose plant and is simply a term that has taken hold in Turkish pipe trading. The firm, too, refers to its products by this name in its own texts.

The catalog uses both ebonite and acrylic for stems; how the two materials behave under heat and bite pressure is compared in the stem materials entry. Production rests on an arrangement combining mold-based series work with hand finishing; the meaning of this in-between position is discussed in the artisan pipe and factory pipe entry. The shape repertoire is predominantly classic: straight-chambered billiards, cone-chambered Dublins and sharp-lined bulldogs appear regularly in the catalog.

Series and Stamps

The brand divides its products into series carrying separate names. The current catalog includes star-named lines such as Kırmızı Yıldız (Red Star), Sarı Yıldız (Yellow Star), Üç Yıldız (Three Star) and Kuyruklu Yıldız (Comet), alongside the Zirve, Professional, Diamond, Collection, Hand Made, Bamboo, Outdoor and reading-pipe series. The star names are the group most closely identified with the brand.

Among collectors it is said that the star's color and number give an idea of the pipe's length or the grade of briar used. However, the accounts of this correspondence contradict one another, and the manufacturer has not published an organized stamp chart. For this reason it is more accurate to read the star names as series names rather than as a strict quality standard.

Place in Turkish Pipe Making

Türkiye's pipe tradition was long shaped around Eskişehir meerschaum carving, and briar pipes entered the country largely through imports. Şahin's importance comes from having carried on domestic briar-pipe manufacturing with more than forty years of continuity and on an industrial scale. For this reason the brand is regarded as the first name mentioned when domestic briar pipes are discussed in Türkiye.
