Saladich is the brand of pipes Catalan master Joan Saladich i Garriga signs with his own name. Known contact records place the master at an address in Catalonia, connected to Sabadell. The workshop is not a production facility but the scale of a one-man studio: pipes are not made for shelf stock but for a person, each piece taken on as a separate commission.
Repertoire
What holds the master's work together is not a fixed family of shapes but the commission itself. Portrait pipes worked from a photograph, bowls carved with human and animal figures, classic shapes interpreted to the client's request, mold-free freehand pieces, and remakes of old examples all come from the same bench. The Saladich name is better known in Spanish pipe circles for these carved bowls in particular — pieces that resemble a small sculpture when held in the hand.
Alongside this, the master has also undertaken repair and restoration on pipes brought in by collectors and antique dealers; in his own promotional material he attributes this work to years of experience at the bench.
From Block to Bowl
Material is separated according to the work to be done. Drying time runs three to eight years; briar blocks with clean, legible grain go to classic shapes and freehands, while those with dense, tight grain — which don't fall apart when carved — are set aside for figural bowls. This separation means the workshop's shape repertoire is tied directly to block selection.
Mechanical assistance is kept to a minimum in shaping. Carving is done with gouges and straight chisels, and turned forms are shaped by hand-held chisel on the lathe. No additive — oil, flavoring or a ready carbon coating — is applied to the bowl's interior surface; the master's reasoning is that such treatments obscure the formation of briar's own coking layer (culottage).
Stems are also hand-shaped. The usual choice is acrylic, though horn or amber are also used when they suit the pipe's style, it is noted. For band and cap ornamentation, silver, gold, amber and ivory are cited; ivory should be read today as a historical practice in light of current trade regulations.
Limits of the Sources
Nearly everything known about Saladich rests on the master's own promotional text. His birth year, the workshop's founding date, and annual output appear in no record; the Sabadell information also comes only from a contact address and has not been independently confirmed. The master's own domain is not accessible today, and the last entries on his personal pages date to the early 2010s. For this reason it is not known whether the workshop is still active, and this entry is limited to what can be verified.
