Sébilo is a small pipe workshop founded by French maker Patrice Sébilo in 1987 in the Breton town of Herbignac. The brand owes its reputation largely to a single material: oak drawn from the region's Brière marshes, blackened after centuries underwater — that is, morta (bog oak). The workshop closed in 2002; its fixtures and material stock passed to another maker.
From Carpentry to the Bench
Patrice Sébilo was born in 1957 in the Brière region of Brittany. He started out as a furniture carpenter, then spent thirteen years in the machine and aerospace industry. In 1987 he changed course and returned to wood, setting up his own bench in Herbignac. He quickly became a recognized name in his field. Although he handed part of his output over to machine work, the workshop never grew beyond that scale; he kept the work as a craft rather than mass production. By the time it closed, he was, according to records, the last pipe maker still active in Brittany.
A Production Built on Morta
Morta is oak that has hardened and darkened over thousands of years lying oxygen-starved at the bottom of a marsh; it is far less forgiving to work than briar, prone to cracking and internal flaws. Sébilo had started using this material regularly years before it became known in pipe circles. Until morta drew wide interest in the mid-2000s, according to accounts, only two makers worked the wood consistently over the years: Sébilo and his Austrian counterpart, Josef Prammer. Sébilo's pipes stay close to classic shapes; what stands out is the material's matte, dark, lightly textured surface. How this wood is handled at the bench is described further in the entry on making pipes from morta.
The Workshop Changes Hands
Sébilo gave up pipe making in 2002 and moved into a job in the furniture industry. He sold the workshop, its tools, and his entire material stock that same year to American maker Trever Talbert, who had just relocated to France. Talbert Pipes worked out of this workshop until 2009, and a significant portion of his morta pipes came from the stock inherited from Sébilo. The international attention the material gained in later years is largely the product of this second period; but the workshop that produced the first sustained morta pipe tradition in Brittany was Sébilo's.
The brand is not in production today. Sébilo-signed pipes occasionally appear on the secondary market, tracked as examples from the early period of morta pipes.
