Sergey Dyomin is a Russian pipe maker working in Saint Petersburg. He both produces pipes under his own name and is considered the senior maker of the joint workshop PS Studio. His name is associated with his insistence on working briar on the lathe, and with his stocky, voluminous bodies.
Pushing the Lathe's Limits
What sets Dyomin apart in the community is a choice of method. In pipe making, complex bodies are usually shaped freehand or with hand tools; Dyomin, by contrast, is known for seeking ways to produce those same shapes on the lathe. Presentation texts about him cite, as examples of this pursuit, a spherical four-sided body and a diamond-cross-section shank worked on the lathe — since these examples rest on a single maker's page, they should not be taken as a verified production record. The general thrust of the approach is clear, though: lathe shaping is being extended into work usually considered the domain of freehand craftsmanship.
His work reads with the line of his master, drawn from industrial and automotive design. He also has a manner of his own: keeping bodies voluminous while still holding their balance is counted as his signature. Precision of measurement is especially highlighted in the mouthpiece materials and the fit of the joint, a rigor that matches the shared manner of the Saint Petersburg school.
Apprentice Years
Dyomin came to the bench late in life. Records state he spent his youth in the military, serving at the Baikonur Cosmodrome during the Soviet period; this period of service has not been confirmed by an independent source. His birth year is likewise not known for certain; age information about him rests only on maker profiles.
His turning point back into the trade came in 2002. That year, at an event held by the Saint Petersburg Pipe Club, he met Vladimir Grechukhin and became the apprentice the master was looking for at the time. The two worked together for years; the division of labor was clear from the start — design was Grechukhin's domain, and Dyomin acquired his production and bench skills over the course of this period.
PS Studio
The partnership took institutional shape in 2008. Grechukhin, Dyomin, and Aleksandr Tupitsyn — said in records to have been twenty-five at the time — founded the workshop they called "The Project" among themselves, PS Studio. The arrangement was an extension of the apprenticeship years: design belonged to Grechukhin, and craftsmanship was left to the other two makers. Over time the brand became identified with the phrase "Grechukhin's student," and Dyomin became the most senior hand in this structure. His continuing to produce work under his own stamp alongside his workshop duties means that both signatures draw on the same workshop culture.
This structure makes Dyomin's name legible in two separate places: in work bearing the PS Studio stamp, he is a workshop hand, while in work bearing his own stamp, he is the maker who takes on every shape decision himself. In the apprenticeship chain that took institutional form in Russian pipe making during the 2000s, the line running from Grechukhin to Dyomin, and from there to the workshop's younger names, is counted as one of the frequently cited forms of transmission from this period. Since most of what is known about the maker rests on dealer profiles and community compilations, no reliable record exists regarding production volume or line names.
