Shekita (Konstantin Shekita)

Shekita is the brand of handmade pipes signed under his own name by Ukrainian maker Konstantin Shekita (b. 1967, Kyiv). He is counted as one of the first makers whose name is cited in Ukraine's shift toward regarding pipe making as an individual craft distinct from factory work.

The Path to Craft

Shekita entered the trade not as a pipe enthusiast but as a factory worker. A maker with a background in sports who also worked as a stunt double in film, he started in 1990 at the Golden Gate pipe factory in Kyiv, shaping and polishing mouthpieces; within a few years he had reached the point of producing an entire pipe from design to finishing. In 1997 he began working under his own name, while maintaining his ties to the factory for a while longer.

This trajectory is a legible example of the shift, in the post-Soviet period, of pipe production in the region from large facilities to one-man workshops. He is said to have taken up pipe smoking only after becoming deeply immersed in the craft, doing so, by his own account, to understand what a smoker expects.

Material, Style, and Scale

The briar he used in his early pipes was of Albanian origin, grown in areas close to the Adriatic coast and selected before being sent to Ukraine. He favors both smooth polish and sandblasting for surface finishing; in shape he does not stick to a single line, working across a wide range from classic dimensions to free-form, sculptural shapes, and his attention to detail is considered consistently meticulous.

Production has stayed small-scale throughout. Commercial presentations mention around two hundred pipes a year; archival records, on the other hand, report more than five hundred pieces for the entire period from his going independent to the early 2010s. Neither figure has been confirmed by an independent record. It is known that the maker keeps part of the pipes he produces in his own collection rather than selling them.

Visibility

His name becoming known outside Ukraine began with competitions in the mid-2000s. Records indicate he placed second in 2006 in a billiard-shape competition organized by a Russian tobacco magazine. He took part in the 2007 gathering in Przemyśl, Poland, and in the international meeting held in Russia the same year; his circle expanded beyond Europe when he took part in the major pipe show in Chicago in 2008. It is also reported that pipes he made were given to the winners of slow-smoking competitions held in Kyiv.
