Skovgaard is the name of the pipes stamped under his own name by Danish pipe maker Lasse Skovgaard Jørgensen. Born in 1983, the maker works in the southern part of the island of Sjælland. His reputation spread beyond Denmark's borders fairly quickly, thanks in part to his apprenticeship years at his father's workshop and to the factory discipline he gained at one of the country's long-established pipe firms.

An Apprentice Trained at Larsen's Bench

His father, Benni Jørgensen, is also a pipe maker, and Lasse's first contact with the craft was established at this workshop. His entry into the trade, however, came not through pipes but through accessories: at sixteen, he was carving tobacco tampers from buffalo horn for W.Ø. Larsen. By eighteen he was working on the same firm's "select" and two-tone lines; at nineteen he was assigned to what is considered Larsen's most demanding work, the making of straight-grain pipes. Having practiced, while still in high school, on a production line regarded as a benchmark of Danish pipe making is considered the source of the technical confidence in the master's later work.

The 2004 Chicago Debut

The decision to begin production under his own stamp was made at the encouragement of master Teddy Knudsen, a friend of his father's. In 2004, Skovgaard went to the Chicagoland international pipe show with twelve smooth-surfaced pipes bearing his own name; this first batch sold out over the course of the show. The following year he returned with seventy-five pipes, this time mainly sandblasted bodies, and the result was the same again. These two appearances are considered the turning point that built the workshop's buyer network outside Denmark; the master's work has reached many countries since that date.

Approach to Surface and Shape

Skovgaard's work carries both the freehand line of the Danish School and the measured craft discipline learned at a factory workshop. Sandblasted surfaces make up a distinct portion of production; in deep sandblasting, the annual rings of briar stand out like relief. Alongside classic shape families, there are also bodies named by the maker himself; sources mention shapes called "Whale" and "Elephant's Foot."

At the top of the grading scale is the premium stamp reserved for the small number of bodies whose grain or shape is judged exceptional; sources refer to this stamp as "Lion." The workshop is a one-man operation with deliberately limited annual output; since every pipe comes from the same hand, production volume is set by the master's own working pace.

The stamping arrangement also follows the common practice among independent Danish masters: the maker's name is struck under the bowl, alongside a mark indicating the piece's grade. Unlike the model-number-based system of mass-production brands, this arrangement points to a mode of production in which each piece is assessed individually. Skovgaard's name is counted among the young generation of Danish masters who emerged with their own stamp in the early 2000s; this generation is regarded as the representatives of a transitional period, moving from the country's large workshops into small independent shops.
