Sven Knudsen

Sven Knudsen ranks among the first generation of masters of hand-shaped pipemaking in Denmark. He was the elder brother of Teddy Knudsen. Because he spent much of his career under other people's brands, his name is often mentioned second when the Danish school is discussed. His working life falls into three chapters: his bench years at two large Copenhagen workshops, the setup he built for himself in the countryside, and the short-lived partnership he ran with his brother.

The Suhr's Years and Shapes Credited to Others

Records indicate he joined the Suhr's Pibemageri workshop in Copenhagen around the mid-1950s, brought in by Poul Rasmussen, who at the time was training under Sixten Ivarsson. Like every newcomer to the workshop, he started at the repair bench, but soon reached the point of finishing a pipe entirely on his own from start to finish. Because Rasmussen was not a regular fixture at the bench, the weight of production quickly shifted onto Knudsen's shoulders. The long-term result was that his share in Danish pipe history went unrecognized for a long time: some of the shapes produced in those years were later credited to Rasmussen's name. Hans Jonny Nielsen, later known by the nickname "Former," also trained under Knudsen at the same workshop.

Heading the Larsen Workshop

Records show he left Suhr's in 1959 and set up a small workshop of his own in Copenhagen. Because he supplied the city's established tobacconists, his name appeared for years in their catalogues; W. Ø. Larsen and Pibe-Dan were foremost among them. Things changed when Larsen's shop manager Svend Bang suggested he head the newly established pipe workshop attached to the store: Knudsen was now responsible not for his own bench but for a crew. Alongside running the shop, he did the sandblasting himself and drew some of the models in the shape chart. That same Svend Bang would go on to found his own workshop, S. Bang, in later years. Accounts say that when Knudsen decided to leave the city in 1963, he did not leave the post empty; management of the Larsen workshop passed to Former Nielsen.

Tappernøje and the Dantonian Partnership

He set up his new arrangement in a house he bought in the village of Tappernøje, south of the island of Sjælland, near Præstø. Production there turned into a joint venture in 1970 when his brother Teddy joined him: "Dantonian PipeWorks." The model range the two brothers put together leaned heavily on shapes Sven had already developed; the names "Walrus" and "Swan" in sources are associated with him. The catalogue distributed in early 1971 was prepared only in English, since the target markets were Germany, the United States, and Japan. The pipes were made to order and bore the "Dantonian - Handicraft of Copenhagen" stamp. The partnership lasted about two and a half years: Teddy went his own way in early 1973, while Sven moved to Næstved and continued production under the same name a while longer.

Stamp, Style and Later Years

Sixten Ivarsson's recommendation to his contacts in Japan was decisive in giving Knudsen's work a wide following in that country; in later years a significant share of his output went straight to collectors there. He marked his pipes with the "S. Knudsen" stamp, alongside a figure of a head wearing a headband, whose meaning is described differently across sources. He did not use a quality grading system. Selecting his own briar blocks and sustaining a freehand approach without handing it over to machinery are considered the distinguishing marks of his work. When health problems began to affect the sensitivity of his hand, he formally closed the workshop in 1997; his name faded somewhat from the community's attention for a while, then returned to circulation in the early 2000s when the pipes he had left behind were collected and showcased. Records indicate he died in 2010.
