Tim West is an American briar pipe maker working in Columbus, Ohio. He made his first pipe in 1967 and began earning his living from the craft after 1975. A self-taught artisan, he has worked alone for half a century. J. H. Lowe & Co., a pipe-repair parts firm founded in Brooklyn in 1947, is also now part of his company, Tim West, Inc., and is run out of Columbus.
Workshop and Method
Production runs entirely by his own hand in a basement workshop at his home. Power tools are used for drilling, shaping, sanding, and polishing, but every stage is set up and guided manually; the workshop's scale is closer to a one-person bench than a factory. Annual output was reported at around fifteen hundred pieces in the mid-1990s, dropping to twelve hundred in later records.
He favors Grecian briar for the wood. No oil or similar curing method is applied; the block is dried naturally only. Sources give drying times ranging anywhere from one to five years, so no single figure is stated here. Staining uses alcohol-based aniline dyes, with natural, walnut, and dark walnut as the base tones, finished with a carnauba wax coat. Stems are made of lucite and vulcanite. Records indicate sandblasting was not used in the early period, with fine needlepoint carving applied to some pipes instead; sandblasted examples appear in later records as well. The pipes with the cleanest grain are set aside under the name "Best of the West."
Formal Language and Stamps
The maker's signature piece is a freehand interpretation left unworked as plateau at the top, with a V-shaped bowl that narrows toward the bottom — a line considered close to the approach popularized by the Danish school after the 1960s. He does not repeat classic shapes identically, adding a small variation to each. A distinct strand within his output are the pipes commissioned by Columbus resident James Vieth to his own designs: long-lined, lightly European-style billiards, Dublins, and bulldog shapes, made with dark stains and unusually long silver bands.
Stamping falls into two periods: pipes from the first five years carry "T.M. West, Ltd.," later ones the block-letter "TIMWEST" signature. Since the maker has never dated his pipes, dating is done through the stamp and the shape. Records indicate he won the award for best standard shape at the 1983 Pipe Collectors International show. He is also known to work from his own shape charts, producing commissioned copies that match the shape, grain, and stem of an existing pipe.
From Craft to Business
He lost his carpenter father in 1960, at just ten years old; his first contact with wood came on his father's job sites. He became interested in pipes at seventeen. Since the GBD and Charatan pipes on the shelves of Smokers' Haven, Columbus's pipe hangout at the time, were beyond his budget, he tried making his own pipe from a briar block handed to him by Sid Ritter at the shop. Production paused during his art studies at Ohio State University and the years that followed.
In the fall of 1975 he returned to the craft as a founding member of an artisan community established at Monkey's Retreat on North High Street in Columbus. The community soon began touring craft fairs; West's fair schedule rose to twenty-five stops in 1990, dropping to two or three a year in later years. In 1980 he opened his own shop, Tim West Pipes, at Ohio Center near downtown; in 1991 he closed the shop, moved the entire operation to his home workshop, and turned to wholesale.
