Trebor is a British pipe brand that emerged in London at the start of the twentieth century and is today known less for its name than for the patent number it carries. The 6518/12 stamp seen on the shank marks a registration taken out in the name of Baron Cohen, owner of Baron & Co., which advertised itself in Piccadilly as a "cigarette specialist." The application was filed on March 16, 1912, and the registration was published on December 12, 1912. What year the brand itself was founded is not known; the earliest firm date we have is this patent itself.
The Solution the Patent Brought
The subject of the registration is a cooling chamber opened into the shank. The extended end of the stem enters this chamber; instead of a single channel between chamber and bowl, there are two or more parallel holes. One opening at the tip of the stem draws in smoke, while a second opening lets condensed moisture drain into the chamber; the end of the chamber is closed with a screw plug, so that accumulated moisture can be cleaned out. The specification states the same mechanism could also be applied to cigar and cigarette holders. The purpose is twofold: to cool the smoke by lengthening the path it travels, and to keep moisture from reaching the mouth. Other British patents from the same period explored the idea of a multi-channel smoke path as well; the best known of these is the Falk patent. Stamping the patent number onto the pipe was common practice in those years, and it is considered today a clue useful for dating purposes.
Chain of Ownership
Who held the Trebor name is surprisingly unsettled across trade directories. The only detailed account on this subject is a list shared by a collector in a forum post that cannot be confirmed elsewhere; the sequence below should therefore be taken as a sketch drawn from the records, not a certainty. As the account goes, the brand appears under Cohen & Co. in 1921; by the late 1920s, Trebor Ltd and Cyril Arnold Ltd are cited together, and by the 1930s Baron & Co. joins them. After the gap opened by the Second World War, the name pairs with L. Hill & Co. alone at the end of the forties, then with Trebor Products & Agencies in the fifties, dropping out of the listings entirely after 1957.
Some of these companies are noted as directly connected to Baron Cohen, while the rest appear for a few years and then vanish; Cyril Arnold Ltd, for instance, appears in London telephone directories only through the second half of the 1920s. Researchers wanting to trace such short-lived companies turn, alongside trade directories and company registers, to archival projects compiling British industry. A frequently cited reference book on brand-to-manufacturer matching is also reported to link Trebor to Cyril Arnold Ltd and Baron & Co.
Not to Be Confused With
The much better-known Trebor of today, sharing the same name, is a confectionery company founded on January 4, 1907, in Forest Gate, east London; its name comes from reading "Robert" — the surname of one of its founders — backward. There is no known connection between the two Treborys; the resemblance is simply two separate businesses searching for a brand name arriving at the same wordplay.
The pipe-world Trebor today is a name encountered only in secondhand collections. It is said the brand was occasionally presented alongside John Cotton products in American tobacco publications, and that some surviving examples are recorded with silver bands; neither detail has been confirmed by independent sources. The one certainty is that the number on the shank provides a solid basis for dating these pipes to a specific year.
