Uhle's, formally the Uhle Tobacco Company, is a tobacconist shop that has operated in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, since 1939. It is counted among the few surviving examples of the "tobacconist who blends his own" tradition common in mid-twentieth-century America: the shop was founded not as a brand factory but as a tradesman's business, weighing and mixing tobacco behind the counter while also repairing pipes. This continuity of more than eighty years is also explained by the fact that the shop has passed through only two families' hands; ownership has changed only once since its founding. In the American pipe community, the name Uhle's is thus remembered as much as a place name as a brand.

The Founder's Era

The business's founder was John H. Uhle, referred to in records mostly by the name "Jack." The shop operated in its early years on W. Michigan Street in downtown Milwaukee, moving in the second half of the 1950s to Wisconsin Avenue, two streets away — its current location as well. The founder's daily work centered on two things: repairing customers' pipes and hand-blending tobacco at the counter. The identity the shop passed on to later generations grew out of this pairing.

In the 1950s, Uhle added wholesale alongside retail, beginning to supply his own prepared tobaccos and pipes to authorized dealers across the Midwest. In this way the shop moved beyond being a single-storefront tradesman's business and became a name recognized on a regional scale.

The Steinbock Brothers

In February 1982, the founder handed the business over to two brothers who worked for him, Jim and Jeff Steinbock. Jeff Steinbock's tie to the shop goes back to 1974, the years he worked part-time while studying at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee; he moved to full-time staff in 1976 and became store manager in 1979. Records indicate he learned blending directly from the founder. Of the two brothers, Jim left the trade in 2006, leaving Jeff Steinbock at the head of the business.

The most visible change of the Steinbock era was the 1996 expansion. The space, which grew to roughly 150 square meters, gained a sitting area, humidified lockers where customers could store their tobacco, and a separate pipe section; the cigar section was also expanded in the same renovation.

Blends and the Shop's Place

Pipe tobaccos bearing the Uhle's name have been prepared at the shop's own counter since its founding. Carrying on the blending knowledge inherited from the founder is the basis for the business's claim to continuity. The "J.S."-signed pipe Jeff Steinbock developed for the shop is also known among its customers. The business is a member of the Retail Tobacco Dealers of America as well as local trade organizations in Milwaukee.

Shops of this scale have been considered in American pipe culture not merely as points of sale but as gathering places as well. Belonging to the same generation as Ehrlich's in Boston, Jost's in San Francisco, or Grant's Pipe Shop, Uhle's is considered this tradition's representative in the Great Lakes region. The shop's story has also been told in community media, such as the radio program run by Brian Levine.
