Verteramo Pipes is the one-man pipe workshop of Matías Verteramo, working in Argentina's southern Río Negro province. The scale of production is small: every pipe made to order comes from the same hands, from the selection of the burl to the final polish of the mouthpiece. Since briar craftsmanship in South America has a much shorter history than in Europe, workshops like Verteramo's are examples of the handmade pipe circle that has gained visibility on the continent in recent years.
Founding of the Workshop
Verteramo's start is said to rest on experiments he carried out with non-briar woods, particularly fruit-tree burls he could find locally; this is how he learned how each species behaved. After this trial period, correspondence he built up with makers abroad changed the direction of the work; among these names, records cite the Austrian maker Ludwig Lorenz. Records also give 2020 as the year the pursuit turned into a full-time job; in the same period the first comprehensive stock of materials was assembled, made up of Italian briar, Ukrainian-sourced morta, and olive wood.
Shape and Technique
The catalog's weight falls mostly on bent bodies and freeform shapes close to the Danish School approach; rather than the measured repetition of classic English molds, shaping each piece to its burl is fundamental. The smoke channel and bowl holes are opened at the bench itself, without the aid of a mold; the work left to machines is limited to rough shaping.
In surface finishing, a weathered look through rustication stands out. Rather than alcohol-based stains, finishes that preserve the wood's natural tone are preferred, so the grain pattern remains visible even beneath the rustic surface.
The most talked-about part of the workshop is the mouthpieces. It is said that Verteramo casts the acrylic himself, coloring it through a process that takes months of preparation using pigments he obtains from plants. Although this claim rests on a single source, the result is described as producing tones that vary from piece to piece, something not seen in mass-produced mouthpieces.
Current Status
The workshop remains active. Its buyer base is said to have grown over time beyond Argentina's borders, reaching North America and Europe; records note that demand also comes from other continents. Verteramo's design philosophy rests on placing the function required by the act of pipe smoking ahead of formal display, and on never considering any piece flawless.
