Volkan

Volkan is a pipe brand handmade by Alberto F. Paronelli in the town of Gavirate, in the northern Italian province of Varese. It is a workshop-scale brand registered directly under its maker's name: every pipe is shaped by a single hand, without a production line. Volkan is regarded as the second branch of a long-established surname in Italian pipe-making; the first branch is Paronelli, the same family's older brand.

Family History

The Paronelli name entered Italian pipe history in 1945. Jean Marie Alberto Paronelli, who started the trade that year, was not merely a craftsman making pipes; he also worked to institutionalize pipe culture in Italy, and the founding of the pipe museum in Gavirate is attributed to him. His son Antonio carried on the business, and in the third generation two brothers continued along separate brands: Ariberto Paronelli remained at the head of the family brand, while Alberto gathered his own signature into a separate line under the name Volkan. As the story goes, the brand's name is a reference to his grandfather's tireless energy for generating ideas. The year Alberto moved into production at his own workshop in Gavirate is given in records as 2008.

Material and Production

Volkan pipes' bodies are made from Italian briar; sources especially highlight root coming from Sardinia's Gallura region. The point Alberto Paronelli emphasizes in production is that the work is not limited to the turning stage alone: pulling the root from the ground, cutting it into blocks, boiling it, and the years-long drying (curing) process are also links he follows. The cutting work has been carried out with the same master for many years. The brand's own promotional material states that curing takes a few years, and that longer-rested blocks are used in limited series. Style and Series

Volkan's production leans heavily toward freeform interpretations alongside classic shapes. In the brand's own classification, smooth-polished pipes are called Bottega, rustic-surfaced ones Antiqua, and sandblasted ones Calypso. Freeform work is graded within its own tiers; the limited-run, numbered Anima series and an even rarer top group sit at the top of this classification. Unusual silhouettes and decorative elements placed on the body are the main features that make the brand recognizable.

This style is regarded as a contemporary extension of the tradition represented by workshop-scale Italian brands such as Castello: limited-run, handmade production open to formal experimentation.
