Vollmer & Nilsson

Vollmer & Nilsson is the pipe workshop that Martin Vollmer and Anders Nilsson have run together in Malmö, Sweden, since 2001. Their differing surnames come from being half-brothers: Anders, carrying their shared father's name, is five years older than Martin, who carries his mother's name. Since pipe-making is largely a one-person craft, two masters sharing a single stamp and not distinguishing which pipe came from whose hand is a rare arrangement in the craft; the S. Bang workshop in Denmark is a similar example.

A Style Anchored in Classic Molds

The workshop's formal language sets it apart from most of its contemporary Scandinavian masters. Instead of freeform, established molds such as billiard, cutty, and dublin, and measured variations on them, are preferred; the sharp-edged rim characteristic of early twentieth-century English and French pipes is the distinguishing detail of this style.

The briar blocks used are bought in from outside. Smooth, sandblasted, and rustic finishes are all pursued together as surface treatment; keeping a sandblasting machine in-house is unusual for a craft workshop of this scale. For decoration, besides silver, horn and various fine woods are used; the brothers do their own silverwork and hold their own silver hallmark registered in Sweden. Two preferences stand out in the interior work: the bowl is left unlined, and the smoke channel is drilled to 4 mm.

Founding of the Workshop

The entry of Anders, born 1964, and Martin, born 1969, into this trade traces back to a book. On a trip to Copenhagen they picked up a handbook the Danish maker Bjørn Thurmann had devoted to pipe-making, and learned the basic processes working on pre-drilled blocks at home. They soon decided they needed to drill the block themselves and turn the mouthpiece from ebonite rod themselves, which meant a set of machinery a home setting could not support. They found a suitable space in 2001. At the time Anders was working in a laboratory and Martin was studying theology.

The workshop was built debt-free, with machines added as money was saved. The brothers have said they set their own standards against pipes signed by Sixten Ivarsson, Bo Nordh, and Björn Bengtsson. In the early years they showed what they made to no one; their names only became known in the Swedish pipe community in 2004.

Stamp and Continuity

The pipes carry only the "Vollmer & Nilsson" stamp. There is no mark indicating quality tier, year of production, or which brother made it; in any case many of the pipes pass through both of their hands. The workshop has also become one of the places where new Swedish masters have trained; Ronny Thunér says he benefited from the work done here during his own apprenticeship period.

Anders Nilsson died on 8 June 2026 at his home in Malmö at the age of sixty-two; at that point the brothers had been working together for more than twenty years. No information has been made public about how the workshop will proceed from here.
