Wolfram Benz, working under the name WB Freehand Pipes, is a maker known for shaping his pipe bodies with nothing but a file, never putting them through any powered machine. He was born in Pforzheim in 1975; his workshop is now located in the village of Wintzenbach in France's Alsace region.
Shaping with a File
What takes Benz's workshop outside the ordinary is the shortness of his tool list. Every stage, from rough shaping to final surface, is carried out with hand-held files; the body goes through neither a lathe nor a belt sander, and no power grinder is used. The workshop's single small lathe is reserved for mouthpiece work. The natural result of this method is slowness: annual output stays low, and each piece is a single copy — no shape is ever repeated a second time.
The deciding factor in shape is not a pattern the maker has drawn in advance but the block itself. Rather than follow classic shapes, Benz takes the grain direction as his basis and opens the body toward whatever the material allows. This preference is why the great majority of his output consists of freehand pipes set apart from symmetrical molds.
From Metal to Briar
Benz trained as an industrial machine technician and set up his own small workshop after roughly thirty years working as a TIG welder and metalworker. His metalworking background carried over into pipemaking in two ways: he was no stranger to the discipline of shaping material by hand, and he could make himself whatever fixtures he couldn't find on the market.
His first encounter with briar came as a smoker. After switching from cigarettes to the pipe, he began buying up secondhand pipes in bulk and restoring them; this repair habit gradually turned into an interest in shape and material. The threshold into production was a pre-drilled hobby block. He then acquired block and mouthpiece rod along with basic hand tools; a large part of his learning came from watching making videos and his own experiments.
By about four years after working his first block, he had accumulated nearly thirty pipes. At his wife's urging he attended the 2022 Worth pipe show, and six pipes sold at his first booth. With that income he bought a small lathe, the start of hand-cut mouthpiece production; he prepared his first mouthpieces from brightly colored acrylic. Records indicate that for the past year and a half he has devoted most of his working time to pipemaking.
Material Preference
Benz uses almost exclusively long-rested briar; he chases down old stocks, liquidated workshop remnants, and forgotten lots. He is reported to have recently sourced his blocks from suppliers such as R. Barbi and db Berlin.
In the community, his work is regarded less as a search for polished perfection than as honest handwork that lets the material's own character come forward. For this reason, Benz is counted among the small-scale, late-starting representatives of the contemporary European freehand tradition.
