American Smoking Pipe Co.

Founded in New Jersey in 1978 by two friends, American Smoking Pipe Co. deliberately chose its name to set itself apart from a pipe world dominated by European names. The workshop still operates today from Montana, under Mark Tinsky.

American Smoking Pipe Co. is a handmade pipe workshop founded in New Jersey in 1978 and still operating today out of Montana. Its founders, Mark Tinsky and Curt Rollar, had been friends since middle school. The "American" emphasis in the brand's name was a deliberate choice: at a time when top-tier pipemaking was named almost entirely for Europeans, the founders wanted to openly present their work under an American signature.

Apprenticeship and Founding

Both founders learned the trade in New Jersey, at the workshop of Jack Weinberger. Weinberger had started pipemaking as a hobby and then turned it into JHW, a business of his own. Rollar joined the workshop first, still in high school; his first job was cleaning the surface of briar logs to bring out the grain. Tinsky joined the same bench after finishing school and quickly rose to pipemaker. Other names would also pass through Weinberger's shop before founding their own brands.

The idea of founding a joint brand grew out of the pair's love of cycling. By Tinsky's own account, they pedaled from New Jersey to Alaska in 1974; a long European tour in later years was cut short in Türkiye, since the revolution in Iran made continuing eastward unsafe. The decision to found the company was made during that trip and carried out on their return. None of these details have an independent confirmation.

The First Workshop and the First Pipes

Production began first in Frenchtown, on a farm belonging to Rollar's family that was awaiting sale; the pair took on the farm's upkeep and lived there. Because briar took months to order and reach a workable dryness after arrival, the first pipes were not ready until July 1979. When the farm was sold at the end of 1979, the workshop moved to the village of Saylorsburg, Pennsylvania. In October 1982 they moved into their own home, which had a large workspace behind it; their teacher Weinberger died that same year.

Style, Material, and Stamps

The workshop's shape language seeks a middle path between the loose freehand style then fashionable in the 1970s and the rigidity of factory molds. Classic shapes were emphasized in a deliberate move away from the loose freehand forms of the brand where they had trained. Briar is sourced from Greece and mouthpiece blanks from Italy; the maker grades the pipes he produces according to a rating scale he publishes himself.

Early pipes carried the brand emblem, the words "REGD. No," and a brief date-signature combination. The stamping logic is simple: the initials indicate the maker, and the numbers before them the month and year of production. The letters MT indicate Mark Tinsky and CR indicate Curt Rollar; accordingly, a stamp reading "05/86-CR" identifies a pipe made by Rollar in May 1986. When the MT stamp was lost in the mid-1980s, the mark *Z was used in its place for a time; pipes bearing this mark are also Tinsky's work. Information about the stamp change relies on pipe archives and is not backed by documentation.

The star emblem on the mouthpiece went through four phases over time:

  • a plain star outline worked into the surface in white,

  • a star set within an exposed brass ring,

  • a black logo with a white star set under clear acrylic,

  • a briar ring added around this logo.

The End of the Partnership and the Present

The partnership ended in 1990. According to reports, the split wasn't over animosity but a disagreement over whether to grow the business and hire staff; Rollar moved into other pursuits, while Tinsky continued as the brand's sole owner. Shortly after, he added pipe repair to his work as well. This decision proved to be what kept the workshop afloat as the market for new pipes shrank after 1992: as generational shifts and tightening regulations lowered demand for new pipes, the repair needs of enthusiasts who kept using the pipes they already owned remained steady.

The workshop later moved to Wolf Creek, Montana; the date of the move does not appear in the sources. Production runs largely on commission, and official materials speak of more than forty years of continuous production. Tinsky's son Glenn also makes pipes under his own name. For an overview of the American handmade pipe scene, see the Go West entry. Sources don't fully agree on the founding year: some retail promotional materials give 1980, but the maker's own account and pipe archives point to 1978.
