Ben Rapaport is an American researcher known for a writing career spanning more than half a century, bringing together antique pipe collecting and tobacco literature. What sets him apart from the community's other collector-writers is that he looks at the pipe not merely as a smoking implement, but as an object standing at the intersection of art history, industrial history, and the history of the book.

From Collecting to Research

By his own account, he began collecting pipes in 1959; the period that truly turned this into serious collecting came while he was an American army officer stationed in Germany during the Berlin Wall crisis: the European pipes he came across in antique shops there formed the core of his later expertise. His departure from the army in 1979 shifted his focus decisively toward writing and research. As a certified personal-property appraisal specialist, he has valued pipe collections on behalf of museums and private collectors; according to his Pipedia entry, he has also served as a consultant to a tobacco and society research center at the University of Alabama since 2001.

Books and Bibliography

Rapaport's writing runs on two tracks. On one side is bibliography: the compiling effort that began with the 1972 A Tobacco Source Book matured into the comprehensive The Global Guide to Tobacco Literature, published in 1989, which superseded that earlier, more limited work. On the other side are handbooks aimed at collectors, the best known of which is A Complete Guide to Collecting Antique Pipes (1979, revised edition 1998), long considered the field's standard reference. His book on meerschaum, Collecting Antique Meerschaums: Miniature to Majestic Sculpture, 1850-1925 (1999), covers the carving tradition from the mid-19th century to the early 20th. In later years his books ranged widely — from Qing-dynasty opium pipes to European porcelain pipes, from tobacco use in the American Civil War to the tobacco industry of 1850-1920. The 2024 book The Wide World of Wood Tobacco Pipes covers two centuries of wooden-pipe craft.

One of his most consulted works isn't a book at all but a list: a subject-organized listing of English-language pipe and tobacco books, which he updates as new titles appear. Compilations like these make the otherwise scattered body of pipe books and publications traceable.

Standing in the Community

His writing appeared regularly in Pipes & Tobaccos magazine, which ceased publication in spring 2019; some of his articles are accessible via Pipedia. He is also known for the talks he has given at pipe clubs. The honors the community has given him run as follows: according to records, membership in the Pipe Smoker's Hall of Fame in 1973, founding membership of l'Académie Internationale de la Pipe in 1985, admission to the Confrérie des Maîtres-Pipiers of Saint-Claude in 1989, and the Doctor of Pipes title from the Chicagoland Pipe Collectors Club in 2004. In the ongoing discussion over whether antique pipe collecting and contemporary briar collecting form two separate cultures, Rapaport's writing is among the antique side's principal sources.
