Pipedia is an English-language online reference, open to contributions from anyone, on tobacco pipes, pipe brands, and pipe makers. It runs on the same MediaWiki software used by Wikipedia, which keeps page history, discussion pages, and the file archive under one roof. Today it is regarded as the pipe community's largest shared knowledge base.

Founding and How Contributions Work

The site is reported to have been founded in 2007 by American pipe maker Scott Thile. According to the founder's interviews, the idea grew out of the thought that a site introducing Danish makers could just as well be built for American makers; aside from two interviews, no document confirms this detail.

Articles move forward through direct editing by registered users. Automatic account creation was closed for a period because of heavy spam attempts, and account requests are now taken by email. A collector who does not want to edit directly can instead pass along their information and photographs to an active contributor, and this is an accepted route; many brand pages in the archive have grown this indirect way.

Size and Content of the Archive

By the site's own count, total pages exceed twenty-five thousand. Roughly two thousand of these are actual articles, and more than eighteen thousand are uploaded images, videos, and documents — in other words, by sheer volume Pipedia is less a text encyclopedia than a photograph archive. This is also where the real value lies for a collector comparing stamps and hallmarks.

On the text side there is a separate index for brands and makers, a materials-and-craft section linked to entries such as briar, a glossary explaining terminology, and supplier lists for pipe making. The "information wanted" page set aside for pipes whose origin cannot be determined shows just how much of the archive is still an open question.

Copyright and Use in Research

The content is a mix of public-domain material and copyrighted material used with permission. Copyrighted sections may only be used with permission obtained and the source credited; some sites from the Danish, Italian, and Swedish pipe communities have given their material on that condition. The result is a structure different from a freely licensed encyclopedia: the texts cannot simply be lifted elsewhere as they are, though the facts they contain are open to any researcher's use.

Because it gathers brand histories, stamp tables, and workshop records scattered across sources into one place, Pipedia has become a frequent stop in pipe research. Against that, the reliability of articles varies by author; some pages rely on printed books and periodicals, while others are nothing more than a single collector's note. For this reason the site gives the best results when cross-checked against archives built on primary records, such as Grace's Guide.
