Clubb enters pipe history not as a manufacturer's brand but as the name of a tobacconist. The same name points to two separate shops: A. Clubb & Sons, founded in Toronto in 1878, and a business of the same title operating in Los Angeles in the first half of the 20th century. In pipe collecting, this name is read not as a signature on a bowl but as a trace of distribution — it tells us not who made the pipe, but which counter it passed through.
Toronto: A. Clubb & Sons
The business was founded in Toronto in 1878 and operated for many years at 49 King Street West. It was a full-service tobacconist selling cigars, tobacco, and smoking accessories. Rather than manufacturing pipes under its own name, it mostly sold the products of well-known English makers of the day in its own stamped boxes — an arrangement common in 19th-century North American retail.
The most concrete surviving evidence of the name lies exactly there: pipes that have come down to us inside their original shop-stamped boxes. One known example is a Victorian-era set whose box reads "A Clubb & Sons / 49 King St West Toronto" on the outside and which contains a BBB pipe dated 1876. Such a box carries small archival value in its own right, as it alone documents the trade channels through which briar pipes crossed the Atlantic.
The Los Angeles Shop
The same trade name appears on the American West Coast in the early 20th century. A. Clubb & Son, a cigar and tobacco shop located on West Sixth Street facing Pershing Square in Los Angeles, is reported to have been in business between 1914 and 1937. Nearly everything known about this shop has been compiled not from commercial records but from printed ephemera such as box labels and matchbook covers. Being a tobacconist facing a square in the heart of the city fits the typical positioning of shops of the period.
The Limits of the Record
The shared title of the two shops suggests a family connection between them, but that connection is not documented. Whether the Toronto business opened a branch out west, whether a branch of the family emigrated, or whether the name was simply taken over cannot be determined from the current record. The dates for the two shops are also given inconsistently across different secondary compilations; the ranges above should therefore be understood not as definitive but as what the records report.
As it stands, Clubb is less a brand history than one of those cases where, once the commercial archive falls silent, collected objects become the source themselves. The surviving box, stamp, and label are the last legible fragments of a lost retail network. It is remembered as one of the entries that shows what makes a pipe valuable is not only its maker — the counter that sold it is also considered part of the story.
