Jim Lilley is a retired pipe collector and amateur researcher living in Dumfries, in southern Scotland. His name is associated with a tidy archive devoted to a single brand, Peterson pipes, and with the written work behind that archive. By his own account he is of Celtic descent; his family crossed from Ireland to Scotland in the early 1800s, and he counts this tie as one of the reasons he gravitated toward an Irish-founded brand.
From Scattered Curiosity to a Systematic Collection
Lilley's collecting did not begin with a single brand: for many years his holdings were a mixed accumulation that included both widely produced mass-market brands and individual artisan-made pipes. Narrowing the scope deliberately came later, as a decision. He names two pieces as decisive in this shift: a smooth (unblasted) 314 System and a "Baskerville" from the Sherlock Holmes series.
The sheer number of series the brand has produced makes it hard to keep a randomly growing pile trackable. Lilley's solution was to break the collection into small sub-collections. By his own account, the roughly 300-400 pieces in the whole are grouped along roughly three axes: those separated by stamp and period (Patent-era pipes, pre-Republic-stamped pieces, London-made Petersons), those belonging to a named series (Sherlock Holmes, Mark Twain, Darwin), and those tied to a specific calendar or model (year pipes, anniversary and commemorative models, standard "Star" and "Red" Systems).
Alongside this grouping, a second distinction is also at work: pipes smoked regularly are not mixed with pieces kept in museum condition, never lit. This line between use and preservation is a habit found in every field of collecting that has become systematic.
Peterson Pipe Chronicles
What sets Lilley apart from an ordinary collector is that he wrote down the knowledge he had gathered. The absence of a single, accessible source for the brand's history led him first to keep a diary titled "The Peterson Pipe Connoisseur & Collector" (opened, as far as can be judged from his farewell post, around 2010), and later to prepare the series of articles titled "Peterson Pipe Chronicles" for Pipedia. He describes this work not as a finished book but as an ever-expanding draft, and says he considers it a guide aimed especially at people newly discovering the brand.
The Sallynoggin Visit
In his farewell post of October 2012, he announced he would be pausing the diary due to declining health, stating the archive would remain online as a reference source. In the same post he recounts making the trip to Ireland he had long put off, and touring Peterson's facility in Sallynoggin. According to his account, the company's owner Tom Palmer met him on this visit, and in recognition of his research into the brand's history he was presented with a "Baskerville" pipe with a silver spigot fitting engraved with his name. Lilley writes that he also met David Blake, a silver worker who had been with Peterson for more than fifty years, at the workshop.
Today, for enthusiasts working on Peterson, the Chronicles articles are regarded as an early, unified reference text compiled from scattered catalogues and stamp knowledge.
