John P. Seiler is an American writer and collector who carried pipe collecting into a fictional universe of his own making. His actual profession is engineering; he holds a graduate degree in industrial hygiene, is a licensed engineer in the state of Pennsylvania, and is a Fellow of the Acoustical Society of America. Records indicate his work has been chiefly in occupational health and safety in mining, particularly noise control. What made him known in the community, though, is not this technical background but the story series he began writing in 2000.

The Emperor Leopaldo Saga

By Seiler's own account, the series' starting point was a simple gap: there was no piece of fiction with pipes and pipe collecting at its center. The universe he built is set in a feudal order scattered among the stars in the very distant future; Earth was destroyed centuries earlier. Genuine "Old Earth" tobacco and briar have nearly run out and been replaced by synthetic substitutes; the genuine pieces that occasionally surface are worth a fortune. Emperor Leopaldo, who gives the series its name, is the ruler at the head of this order, and in his world smoking a pipe is a mark of prestige among the nobility.

What distinguishes the stories is the placement of real brand, shape, and blend names within this fictional frame. The author states that he built his characters drawing on people he knew from the old #Pipes chat channel, and that some of the pipes and tobaccos used come from his own collection. The texts have been collected into two volumes, and a handful of stories outside the series have also been published separately; titles such as "The Pipe Show Murder," "The Disappearing Charatans," and "Hawkbills in Space" blend mystery, science fiction, and hobby narrative in a single pot. In this respect, the series can be placed alongside the other serialized pipe fiction circulating in the community.

Non-Fiction Writing

Beyond fiction, Seiler has also written technical pieces on pipes. A study he prepared together with Robert W. Lawing, describing the restoration of a Charatan "cup and saucer" pipe, was published in The Pipe Collector, the journal of the North American Society of Pipe Collectors (NASPC). Records indicate the society was founded in 1993 under the name Ohio Pipe Collectors and took its current name in later years; its journal relies heavily on member-written articles. An article titled "We Like Them Rough," co-signed by Seiler and William D. Kotyk, makes the case for rustic and deeply sandblasted surface finishes. After Kotyk's death on 23 January 2019, Seiler wrote a memorial piece recounting their long friendship. Notes he prepared on home tobacco pressing also circulate among texts in the community.

Collection and Echo

Seiler's collection is centered on Castello hawkbill pipes; this set was exhibited at the Chicago show in 2011. The tobacco Emperor Leopaldo favors in the stories, McClelland 5100 Red Cake, marks the point where fiction and reality intersect: according to blending records, McClelland prepared a club-order Virginia blend named "Emperor Leopaldo's Special Virginia Reserve Blend." That the name of stories written for fun reached all the way to a tobacco label is an example of how the community produces its own lore.
