McCoy Pipes is the name of the handmade pipes American pipe maker Will McCoy signed with his own name. It is not a registered brand or workshop but a small-scale production running out of a single person's bench. What is known about it is extremely thin: the only document available is a short introductory note the maker wrote himself. For this reason, most of the information below rests directly on McCoy's own statements and has not been independently verified.
What Is Known and What Isn't
No source gives any information about McCoy's birthplace, the year he set up his bench, the form of the stamp he used, or any model series he may have had. There is likewise no reliable description of his production methods, material preferences, or typical body shapes. In his own introduction he states he has sold a large number of pipes over the years; this is a sales claim and cannot be verified with any figure.
The last documentable activity dates to 2018. Whether production has continued since, or whether the bench remains open, is unknown.
Circle of Makers
The one concrete piece of information in McCoy's introductory note is whom he credits for his technique. The names he mentions are Kendall, DeJarnett, Hildebrand, Rasmussen, and Crawford. This is not a certificate of apprenticeship; it shows how the maker describes his own path of learning. Which master the name "Kendall" on the list corresponds to could not be established in independent sources. "Rasmussen" most likely refers to Kent Rasmussen, though the note gives no more than the surname.
What stands out in the list is that at least two of the names named tie to the same geographic circle. Paul Hildebrand was a master who made freehand pipes in his own shop in Phoenix, held pipe-making courses roughly three times a year, and was a member of both the Arizona Pipe Club and the Arizona Pipe Makers Society; he counted Horace DeJarnett among his close friends. The area code in the contact information McCoy left also corresponds to the Phoenix region.
The records do not establish this connection outright. But when a teaching master, another name from his close circle, and an area code from the same region all line up, it stands as a reasonable reading that McCoy drew on the local pipe-making circle in Arizona. It is a trace, not proof, but a consistent one.
How to Read His Place
McCoy Pipes is one of the many small benches that make up the broad, largely undocumented base of the American handmade pipe scene. These signatures rarely find a place in collector literature; their catalogue, their stamp history, and often even a firm span of active years cannot be established. Taken together, though, they show how pipe making in America was passed along through the 2000s and 2010s via teaching masters, local clubs, and a handful of people who knew one another. McCoy's short note documents exactly that: not a product description, but a chain of learning.
