Miscoipipes (Dimitry Miscoi)

Miscoipipes is the name of the one-man handmade pipe workshop run by Canadian maker Dimitry Miscoi. The workshop was founded as a hobby in 2014, and after a trial period of several years its name began to circulate in pipe circles. Miscoi is said to pursue pipemaking alongside his main occupation, which keeps output small in scale; records indicate annual production does not exceed a few dozen pieces.

Materials and Craftsmanship

The workshop's bowl material is predominantly Italian briar. Miscoi does not put purchased blocks straight to the lathe; he has made it his practice to rest briar for at least several years before working it, and he says he keeps stock in storage that has been waiting for decades. This resting discipline slows production but reduces the risk of cracking and shape distortion. Besides briar, bowls are also made from morta (oak that has spent millennia in a bog) and olive wood. Mouthpieces are hand-cut from German ebonite or Cumberland.

Stabilized organic materials are used for accents and shank rings: mammoth ivory, horn, exotic nutshells, and various woods. In recent years the surface finish has shifted heavily toward sandblasting. The reasoning is practical: finding flawless straight-grain briar suited to a smooth finish has grown increasingly difficult. Miscoi's aim in this area is to achieve a deep, sharp texture reminiscent of old Dunhill sandblasts. On the engineering side, two priorities are said to take precedence: an open draft channel and a bit shaped to suit both clenchers and hand-holders.

Founding of the Workshop

Miscoi's relationship with the pipe began first as a smoker, then as a collector; he has been smoking a pipe since 2003, reportedly favoring English blends along with Virginia and Virginia-Perique. His turn toward collecting and restoring old pipes after university can be counted as the first step toward pipemaking.

The turning point came in early 2014. After following an online pipemaking forum for a while, he acquired a pre-drilled briar kit and finished his first pipe with nothing but a file and sandpaper. Satisfied with the result, he sold off part of his collection to buy briar blocks, ebonite rod, and basic tools; the workshop was built up piece by piece this way. Smoking the pipes he made himself during these years let him tune dimensions and internal channel geometry to his own experience. Records indicate the first Miscoipipes examples changed hands in 2018, and orders became regular after the positive response that followed.

Stamping and Grading

Pipes are stamped with the maker's own logo. One distinctive stance of the workshop is that it does not use a quality-grading system: Miscoi holds the view that only the pieces he considers his best should leave the workshop, and so he does not sort his pipes into classes. This attitude is regarded as an increasingly common choice among small contemporary workshops.
