Parkin: A Pipe Stamp of Uncertain Identity Attributed to Denmark

Parkin is a briar pipe stamp for which almost no institutional record exists, and whose existence can only be verified through pipes circulating on the secondhand market. Neither the founder's name, nor the founding year, nor the workshop where production took place is known. What is nonetheless taken as settled within the pipe community is that the brand is Danish in origin: a Denmark-based secondhand catalogue lists a Parkin-stamped pipe directly under "other Danish brands," and according to Pipedia, major secondhand dealers have adopted the same classification.

Known Stamps and Examples

The number of documented Parkin examples can be counted on one hand, but they offer at least a limited sense of the brand's stamping habits. The stamp on a pipe recorded in a Danish secondhand catalogue reads "PARKIN / Grandee / Handcut 200"; the pipe in question measures roughly 16.4 centimetres long and weighs 70 grams — noticeably larger and heavier than average. A separate example noted on Pipedia is a billiard stamped with the number 15. Read together, the two records show that the brand placed a number next to its name, used a name like "Grandee" for at least one model, and carried a claim of hand-shaping into the stamp itself. Parkin's attribution to Denmark rests on market classification rather than an archival document. Still, in the absence of a record, calling it "Danish-made" should be treated as a strong guess rather than a finding.
