The Darwin series is a commemorative line the Irish maker Peterson released in 2009. The series was prepared for the 150th anniversary of the publication of Charles Darwin's 1859 book On the Origin of Species. Bearing the name of a scientist sets it apart from Peterson's other commemorative releases, which are otherwise dedicated to literary and historical figures.
B42: The Series' Shape
The bowl designed specifically for the series carries the code B42. It is a thick-walled, oversized bent apple — that is, a curved, apple-bowled shape angled forward. In size it sits at the upper end of Peterson's System bowls, and the shank has been left correspondingly thick to match that volume. This large stance is cited as the main feature that puts the series outside the interest of smokers looking for a light, small pipe.
One research series tracking Peterson's molds argues that the shape code was not tied to a single mold over time. According to this, while the first production runs kept to the apple form, later batches produced examples closer to a brandy shape, with a stockier bowl. Because the dates behind this claim cannot be cross-checked against independent records, no year is given here; the reader should simply keep in mind that two pipes stamped with the same code can differ noticeably from one another.
System Construction and Finish Options
Darwin pipes carry the familiar solutions of Peterson's System family: a moisture-collecting reservoir at the end of the shank, an aluminium extension fitting, and a P-Lip mouthpiece angled upward at the point that touches the tongue. The joint between mouthpiece and shank is the tenonless, tapered military mount — an old solution that lets the mouthpiece be removed even while the pipe is still hot. The reservoir is meant to keep condensing moisture away from the bowl, and it forms the backbone of the design line Peterson has carried since the late nineteenth century. For where these parts sit on the pipe, see the pipe anatomy entry.
In terms of finish, the series was offered broadly. Contemporary write-ups mention smooth-polished, rustic, black (ebony), red, Deluxe, and Premier variants, alongside sandblasted examples as well. That not all of these appeared in the maker's own promotional material at the time rests on the note of a single observer who followed the series closely, and has not been confirmed by any other record; the range seen on the market does not always match the official lists.
The Series' Early Years
The most talked-about issue in the series' early period was that supply lagged behind promotion. It is reported, based on a single review written at the time, that scarcity persisted for quite a while, especially after the Deluxe variant's release; the explanation that the delay stemmed from sourcing suitable briar also comes from that same piece and has not been independently confirmed. Peterson's other literary commemorative line, the Mark Twain pipes, is the closest comparison point to Darwin in both shape and System construction.
