Peterson Mark Twain: The Original Pipe and the New Collection

Peterson Mark Twain is a series developed by the Irish Peterson brand, based on measurements taken from a pipe used by Samuel Langhorne Clemens (1835-1910). At the heart of the series sits a single object: a Peterson held in the collection of the Mark Twain Boyhood Home & Museum in Hannibal, Missouri, its bowl thinned by long use.

The Pipe in the Museum

Exactly how Twain came to know the brand is not certain. Those who study the brand's history consider his stay in Vienna, from late 1897 to spring 1899, a likely starting point; Irish-made patent pipes were on sale in the city's tobacconists in those years. Photographs showing Twain with a patent Peterson are also dated to shortly after the turn of the century. The stamps on the museum piece's silver band are said to give the year 1896; this reading rests on sources within the pipe-collecting community and has not been confirmed by the museum or by manufacturer publications. The bowl shape, meanwhile, is traced to a form listed as number 14 in the brand's early catalogs and discontinued in the early 1900s.

What draws the most comment about the pipe today is its wear: the bowl walls have thinned from long use. This shows the object was not a display piece but genuinely a working item that had been smoked through.

Taking the Measurements and the Limited Runs

As the story goes, the process began in Dublin: an old photograph showing Twain with a pipe was noticed at the factory, and once the stamps on the silver band were recognized as the company's own, contact was made with the museum. This account rests on a single chain of sources. Since the shape had long been out of production, new measurements were needed; according to archival records from the Hannibal press, a technician sent from Dublin measured the pipe on site and examined the stamps.

Sources disagree on the dates. One account has the first limited run numbered 1 to 400 in 1980, and a second numbered 1 to 1000 the following year; another source on the brand's history places the 400-piece limited edition directly in 1981. Unnumbered examples were made from 1983 until around 1989; the known exception is the 1985 gold edition, which Hannibal records link to the 150th anniversary of the author's birth. Mentions of examples bearing an 1998 stamp on the band suggest production continued in later years as well, though this detail cannot be confirmed by an independent record.

The series pipes are known for a large, full-bent bowl, a P-lip mouthpiece, and a stamped silver band; they have been offered in smooth, sandblast, and rustic finishes. When collectors set the series pipes side by side with the museum original, two differences stand out: the line of the original bowl is closer to an apple shape, and the seam gap left for wear at the mouthpiece-shank joint on the series pipes is absent on the original. Another detail is that these models lack the tenon extension distinctive to the brand's System mechanism.

The 2010 Mark Twain Collection

On the hundredth anniversary of the author's death, Peterson released a boxed two-pipe set. The first pipe in the set follows the bent P-lip model of the 1980s. The second is a straight poker with a fishtail mouthpiece, a nod to the corn cob pipe Huckleberry Finn smokes in the novel; this second pipe does not carry the System mechanism. The set was offered in smooth, sandblast, and rustic finishes; sources also mention an ebony finish as a fourth option, though only the first three finishes can be confirmed in retailer records. The new bent model is also large in scale; the bright coloring of the smooth finish is said to have been debated among some collectors.
