T. (Thomas) Hamilton

T. (Thomas) Hamilton is the trading name of a tobacconist and pipe seller that operated in Cambridge during the last quarter of the 19th century. Thomas Bonynge Hamilton, after whom the shop was named, was only able to run it himself for a short time, and after his death the business stayed open for twenty more years under another family member. In this respect, Hamilton is a small but well-documented example of how tobacconism could become a family trade in Victorian England.

The Founder and the Founding of the Shop

Thomas Bonynge Hamilton was born in Wantage in January 1863. He spent his youth moving between several towns in southeast England; at eighteen he was working as an assistant in the drapery trade in Maidstone. He married Margaret Ann Mercer in London in December 1883, and toward the end of that decade settled with his family in Cambridge, where he opened a tobacconist's shop on Petty Cury. Sources do not fully agree on the opening date: some records push the business back to 1886, while others point to 1889. The same uncertainty applies to the street number; the shop appears as 23 Petty Cury in some records and 24 in others.

No one else in Hamilton's family was involved in the tobacco trade; for him, it was a start from scratch. An 1889 apprenticeship indenture shows that the shop's first assistant was Walter Thomas Littlechild. The business grew slowly but steadily, and by early 1895 a second location was running at 18 Trinity Street, elsewhere in Cambridge. In July of that same year, Hamilton bought the freehold of the Petty Cury building, of which he had until then been a tenant, at auction.

Early Death and the Alice Howell Years

In March 1895, a fire broke out in the building housing the Trinity Street branch; in the structure, whose ground floor served as the shop and whose upper floors were used as a boarding house, two people died. Records suggest that Hamilton's health broke down after this event. He died suddenly on June 28, 1896, at only thirty-three; the local press of the time reported that death came in Scarborough, where he had gone to rest. The cause of death is not documented with certainty.

At this point, Hamilton's elder sister Alice Howell, born in 1851, took over the business. Alice, a widow who had lost her husband years earlier, had been living right next door to her brother's shop since at least 1891. Named in the probate records, Alice appears in later censuses and trade directories as the business's owner and manager. The shop continued trading under the name T. Hamilton throughout this period. The Trinity Street branch closed shortly after the founder's death, leaving the original shop as the sole surviving business.

Its End and Its Trace in the Records

The business continued to appear in Cambridge trade directories and newspaper advertisements for about twenty years, until Alice Howell's death in 1918. No record of the shop turns up after this date; the business is thought to have been disposed of during the settling of her estate. Neither Thomas's sons nor Alice's daughter carried the tobacco trade forward.

Hamilton's story is a reminder of the role local retailers played in the shadow of the big brands within the world history of the pipe. The trail of such small businesses is usually followed through trade directories and archival records; unlike major manufacturers such as Cope Bros & Company, what remains is often just a handful of advertisements, an apprenticeship indenture, and a retailer's name printed on tobacco tins.
