Wagner is the name of a pipe shop that operated in the state of New Jersey in the United States, and of the pipes the shop had stamped under its own name. The name behind the brand is Irving Wagner, founder of the Brick Church Pipe Shop in East Orange. "Brick Church," the name that gave the shop its name, is a neighborhood name in East Orange inherited from a church. In the trade registry, the business's registration dates to 1964; in later years the registration continued under the name Brick Corner Pipe Shop.

Shops and Blends

Reportedly, the business's name did not stay limited to a single address over time; two more locations in Morristown and Ridgewood were known by the same name even though they were not under the same roof. What is reported is that these branches were under separate ownership while sharing a similar shelf layout and product range. The same records also state that nearly thirty house-blended pipe tobaccos were sold across the three addresses, and that the shops were members of the period's American tobacconists' association (TAA); this membership meant the selection was largely drawn from the association's annual catalogue. These details have not been independently confirmed. A 1972 sales catalogue from the shop does survive today, however, and stands as concrete evidence for researchers studying old pipe and tobacco catalogues of what the shelves of the period held.

Wagner-Stamped Pipes

Pipes bearing the Wagner name were not made at the shop; they were commissioned from other workshops and stamped with this name. Some surviving examples bear the mark "Made in France," which shows that the line was fed, at least in part, by French factories around Saint-Claude. The shop's selection leaned toward smooth, natural-finish pipes without a coat of varnish. This arrangement fits the general habit of period tobacconists having their own brand made elsewhere; for a comparable example, see the entry on Garfinkel.

Importing

Wagner's name is associated with importing as well as retailing. Records say Wagner was the early American importer of Italian Caminetto pipes; the brand's exclusive agreement with the Tinder Box chain came later. According to the same account, after the exclusivity changed hands, the shop kept Caminetto's plainer Business series on its shelves through the 1970s and 1980s. The details of this relationship rest today largely on secondary sources and should be read with some caution.

The year the shop closed is unknown; that it is not active today is certain. The Wagner name is now remembered as a local tobacconist brand recalled through stamped pipes that reach collectors' hands, shop matchbook covers, and catalogue pages. Local names of this kind form a layer of American pipe history that is less documented than the factory brands, but no less decisive at the level of the shelf.
