Dr. Grabow Chronology: From Linkman to Sparta

The Dr. Grabow chronology is the sequence of events showing how dating is done for a brand where no single stamp gives a year. The brand changed name, address, ownership, and technical fittings over more than a century; the task, with a pipe in hand, is to determine which period's address and which company's name the stamp corresponds to. The brand's general narrative is told in the Dr. Grabow entry, and the course of its model names in the Dr. Grabow series entry.
The Chicago Period
At the head of the chain is M. Linkman & Co., founded in Chicago by Louis B. Linkman in 1892. In 1922 the firm built a three-story factory at the intersection of Fullerton and Racine avenues; because this address appears in advertisements and invoices for decades afterward, it is a concrete clue useful for dating.
The Dr. Grabow name is placed as beginning to be used between 1930 and 1931. The name comes from Paul E. Grabow, a Chicago physician Linkman knew; the details of that relationship are told in the Dr. Grabow legend entry. That the firm began marketing its pipes as "Pre-Smoked" in 1937, and registered both that phrase and the Dr. Grabow name as trademarks in 1947–1948, are links in the chronology traceable at the documentary level.
The Second World War years are the most active period for the stamp. Records say pipe names began to be printed in plain block letters around 1943, the slanted block logo and spade emblem appeared in advertisements toward the end of 1944, and around the same time the firm's name in advertisements took the form "Dr. Grabow Pipe Co." The introduction of two-digit postal-zone numbers in major cities, which was also reflected in address stamps, provides an additional marker.
The Move to North Carolina
The cutting off of Mediterranean briar supply during the war years pushed American makers toward domestic alternatives. In these same years, several American workshops turned to the Appalachian region, where mountain laurel, growing there, was influential as a source of blocks. That Dr. Grabow production moved in 1943 to the town of Sparta in North Carolina appears both in the local press of the time and in the factory's own account; production has continued in the same town since that date.
Linkman's stepping down from the company presidency is placed around 1952; he died in Illinois in January 1957. After this transition, the brand passed into the ownership of Henry Leonard & Thomas, Inc., while production continued at the Sparta facility; the period's directories referring to Dr. Grabow as a product based first in Chicago, then in North Carolina, trace this change of hands. Records say that in 1985 Henry Leonard & Thomas and the Mastercraft line merged with the Sparta-based company under the name Sparta Industries; the brand's transfer to the new company is also placed in the same period.
The Final Links
Sparta Industries merged with Lane Limited in 1997; Lane joined R.J. Reynolds in 1999. In early 2006 the Dr. Grabow line and the Sparta facility were sold to a company called International Pipes & Accessories. Because several months passed between the sale's announcement and the completion of the handover, sources give both January and April as dates.
The function of this sequence in dating a pipe is as follows: a shank bearing the Chicago address points to before 1943, one bearing the Sparta stamp to the later period; the way the company's name is written on the stamp narrows the period further still.
