The Dunhill White Spot Guarantee
The evolution of Dunhill's replacement pledge, known by the white spot on the stem, from its unlimited 1910 form to its one-year form in the 1920s, and how this change relates to year-code stamping.

The Dunhill White Spot Guarantee is the name given to the replacement pledge associated with the white dot on the stem of Dunhill pipes. Its importance for dating lies less in the guarantee itself than in what it produced: defining a renewal period required a mark that could document when a pipe had gone on sale, and that need opened the path to the year-code system collectors rely on today.
The Need Behind the Stamp
For a brand to set a limit such as "within twelve months," it needs a way to show when that period began. In the counter of a single London shop, this information could live in the seller's memory; it could not in independent distributors scattered around the world. Dunhill began stamping pipes with a numeric year code in 1922, and also marked pipes replaced under the guarantee with an additional "EX" stamp. Together, these two marks made it possible to police both the time limit and the rule that a replaced pipe would not be replaced again.
Pipes made before 1922 carry no year code; dating them instead relies on changes in the form of the "DUNHILL" and "LONDON" lettering — a dotted or dotless "A," an arched arrangement, the length ratio between the two words, the tail of the "D." For a breakdown of these details, see the entries on Dunhill Patent Stamps and Dating and Dunhill's Additional Stamps.
The Evolution of the Guarantee Text
In its first About Smoke catalog, published in 1910 when the firm entered briar pipe production, it promised a replacement for a defective pipe with no time limit stated; the same wording appears in the 1917 catalog as well. The exact year the white dot appeared on the stem is not certain: sources give dates ranging between 1912 and 1915, and most accounts hold that the dot's original purpose was to show which side of the stem faced up on a straight pipe.
The shift from an unlimited pledge to a time-limited one falls in the postwar years. According to reports, the name "White Spot" first appears in a 1919 price supplement, though without stated conditions; a catalog from around 1920 limits the renewal right to twelve months, and the following year's edition adds that a pipe replaced under guarantee will not be replaced again. The dates for these two steps rest on a single study and have not been independently confirmed against catalog records. By contrast, the 1921 catalog text and the 1922 introduction of the year code and EX marking appear the same way across Dunhill dating guides as well.
Later narrowings of the guarantee likewise rest on single sources: the 1923 catalog is said to have limited free replacement to cases of a cracked or burned bowl, with other repairs charged for, while some American advertising copy from the mid-1920s reportedly shortened the period to ninety days. The 1928 French-language catalog is said to simplify the wording again, stating that a pipe with a manufacturing defect within one year would be replaced free of charge, once only.
For collectors, the practical takeaway of this chronology is simple: a Dunhill without a year code belongs either to the period before the guarantee became time-limited, or to the transitional years, and dating it falls back on the form of the stamps. These details are best weighed together with the criteria discussed in the entry The Mystery of the White Spot.
