A Dunhill ES at Auction: Where the Listing and the Photo Disagree
An online auction listing described a pipe as a 1923 Dunhill ES, but the stem writing and the body's proportions did not match. The case is cited as an example of how far stamp reading can take you.

A Dunhill ES at auction is a small case often cited to illustrate how far stamp reading can take a collector. John C. Loring examined a pipe listed at an online auction using nothing but the listing text and the photographs, and found a mismatch between what the shank writing claimed and what the bowl actually showed. According to the listing, the pipe was a 1923 ES, the long-shanked Canadian shape in the brand's lineup.
The Listing's Claim
The single marker that tied the listing to 1923 was a small digit — a half-height, underlined 3 — struck right after the inner-tube patent number. In the Dunhill stamp layout, this small digit is a year code, and 3 corresponds to 1923. The same face of the shank also carried the MADE IN ENGLAND inscription and the ES shape code, while the other face carried the DUNHILL-over-LONDON line and the H.W. handwork stamp. The seller described the bowl as a Bruyere billiard with an oval-section shank, gave measurements of roughly fifteen centimetres in length and about four and a half centimetres in bowl height, and noted that the stamps had faded from repeated polishing and that the metal inner tube was missing.
Where the Photos Disagreed
The first thing that stood out in the images was the proportions. An ES shape is expected to have a shank noticeably longer than the mouthpiece, yet on this pipe the mouthpiece was longer than the shank. Since the code is generally taken to stand for "extended shank," this reversal of proportion undercuts the very feature that defines the shape. The second detail was the position of the writing: instead of being centred, the shank text had shifted down toward the mouthpiece end, and the letters gave the impression of having been struck one at a time rather than from a single two-line block stamp. Third, the DUNHILL and LONDON lines appeared almost equal in length; this style points not to the period after the year-code system was set up, but to the last months of 1918.
The Repair Hypothesis
Loring places these three observations in the framework of the brand's early repair practices. It is reported that when the factory repaired a pipe, it stamped the year of the repair, reproduced the original stamps as closely as it could, and — because the dies from the 1910s were no longer on hand a decade later — often redid this re-stamping letter by letter. From this, the explanation follows: the pipe may in fact be a 1918 ES. Its shank likely broke, it returned to the factory in 1923, the broken section was cut off and discarded, the lost length was made up with a longer mouthpiece, and the shank writing was renewed letter by letter. The shortening of the shank, on its own, explains both the reversed proportion and the writing's apparently shifted-down position.
The Lesson the Case Leaves Behind
Loring himself notes that this conclusion rests on photographs alone and therefore carries probability, not certainty. The real value of the method lies elsewhere: a year code can tell you not when a pipe was made, but when the shank was last stamped. Secondary markers such as mouthpiece authenticity, the diameter of the white spot, or the shape of the letters only carry meaning together, never on their own. A repair does not erase a pipe's date within the Dunhill system — but it does open up the question of whether the pipe still deserves the shape name it carries.
