Lane Limited

Lane Limited is a pipe tobacco maker, now headquartered in the United States, whose roots trace to Dresden, Germany, in 1890. Considered a defining force in shaping the American aromatic blend style, the company is known both for its globally recognized packaged Captain Black series and for its bulk blends identified by code names, chief among them 1-Q. Bulk tobacco refers to tobacco sold openly by weight rather than in packaged form; Lane is considered one of the world's best-known producers in this category. The company has operated under the Scandinavian Tobacco Group since 2011.

From Dresden to New York

The company was founded in Dresden in 1890 by the ancestors of the Lane family and specialized in pipe and roll-your-own tobaccos. The founder's grandson, Herman G. Lane, left Nazi Germany in 1938 to emigrate to the United States and re-established the business in Manhattan, New York. The company quickly took hold in its new home: its 1940s catalog listed forty different pipe blends.

Pipe tobaccos were produced in the Manhattan building for many years; according to records, production moved to a factory in Tucker, Georgia, around 1983. It's said that some employees were so devoted to the company that they chose to relocate with it from New York to Georgia.

Signature Blends

Lane's best-known brand is Captain Black, which first appeared in its 1956 catalog. Having grown over time into one of the world's most widely recognized packaged pipe tobaccos, this series is counted among the modern representatives of codger blends, the everyday American classics of the category.

The company's flagship on the bulk tobacco side is 1-Q. Built on a base of golden Virginia and black Cavendish with a note of vanilla, this blend has for decades been considered the best-selling bulk pipe tobacco in the US and the world. It is known that 1-Q has been relabeled under different names by various tobacconists, meaning the same blend also circulates under other names. Other code-named bulk blends such as BCA, RLP-6, and MV-1000 are likewise considered classics of the trade.

The American Aromatic Style and Today

By pairing a black Cavendish base with a sweet casing, Lane is regarded as the producer that set the standard for the American aromatic style. In this style, tobacco is defined less by its natural character than by the flavor and scent added to it; casing and flavoring techniques accordingly occupy a central place in the company's approach to blending. Light, sweet-profiled blends have become synonymous with the Lane name over time.

In March 2011, the Denmark-based Scandinavian Tobacco Group acquired Lane Limited; on June 1, 2012, the company's official name changed to "Scandinavian Tobacco Group Lane Ltd." Today the company continues to operate under the Scandinavian Tobacco Group, headquartered in Tucker.
