Samuel Gawith is living history in the world of pipe tobacco. The brand's roots go back to a tobacco and snuff works founded in 1792 in Kendal, a town in England's Lake District — a heritage the firm still proudly carries on its packaging today. Shaped over the centuries by family splits and mergers within Kendal's tobacco trade, the business has operated under a shared roof with its sister company Gawith Hoggarth & Co. since 2015.

Traditionalist Production

What sets Samuel Gawith apart is its production philosophy: the tobaccos are processed on presses and machines, some dating back to the Victorian era, faithful to century-old recipes. The brand's specialty is flake tobacco, steam-heated, pressed into blocks under high pressure, and then thinly sliced. This method gives the tobacco a dark, mature, and deep character.

Famous Blends

  • Full Virginia Flake (FVF): Considered the world's benchmark for pure Virginia flakes, celebrated for its dried-fruit and bready sweetness.

  • Squadron Leader: A balanced, refined English blend classic containing Latakia.

  • 1792 Flake: A strong, dark Kendal tradition flavored with tonka bean.

Availability

Labor-intensive production can't always keep up with demand; the occasional disappearance of Samuel Gawith tobaccos from the market has become something of a running joke in the pipe community. Despite this — or perhaps partly because of it — the brand's blends are among the most heavily cellared tobaccos in collectors' stashes.
