Sutliff Tobacco is counted among the oldest pipe tobacco concerns in the United States. According to industry profiles, it was opened by H. W. Sutliff in 1849 in San Francisco as a tobacco and cigar shop, and over time grew into a manufactory blending its own recipes. The brand kept its corporate identity even after it passed out of the hands of the family whose name it bears, and it was known throughout the twentieth century especially for its bulk-sold blends.
From California to Virginia
The company's early years were spent in retail; according to industry sources, its true manufacturing phase began in 1933 with the launch of Mixture 79, a name still known today. This cube-cut burley-based blend quickly turned from a local product into a nationally recognized name, becoming the core product that kept the company alive for the long haul.
In 1953 the facilities and management moved to Richmond, Virginia. The reason for the move was to be closer to the tobacco leaf and cut shipping costs; Richmond was at the time one of the main centers of the American tobacco trade. Sutliff's production continued in this city for more than seventy years afterward. The factory's first form was designed largely around the manufacture of a single blend, to meet demand.
Changes of Ownership
Fourth-generation Gordon Sutliff handed the company over to Consolidated Cigar Corporation in 1969. When Consolidated joined Altadis U.S.A. in 2000, Sutliff too became part of this large structure. In 2013 the Danish family company Mac Baren bought Altadis U.S.A.'s pipe tobacco division; the Sutliff name was kept and the Richmond factory continued operating. In this period Sutliff also took over the distribution of Mac Baren products across the Americas.
The final change of hands came in 2024: the Scandinavian Tobacco Group took over Mac Baren, and with it, Sutliff. According to trade press reports, production in Richmond stopped on February 28, 2025, and only part of the catalog was moved to the group's facility in Denmark. What happens to the brand name and the rest of the recipes after this date has been left to decisions made within the group.
Its Place in the Bulk Market
Sutliff's recognition comes less from a single flagship product than from its broad catalog. The company was one of the main sources of "bulk" blends shipped to tobacconists in kilo-weight boxes rather than jars or packets; a trade profile from the Mac Baren era puts the catalog size at roughly two hundred fifty recipes. This catalog ran from vanilla- and cocoa-scented aromatic blends to plain Virginia recipes, from soft mixtures worked with Cavendish processing to burley-based classics.
This structure gave Sutliff a special place in American pipe tobacco making: the contents of many unnamed jars on local shop shelves were in fact Sutliff production. This is also why it is often mentioned alongside Lane Limited, which worked the same field; in the community's common view, these two houses are considered the country's main suppliers of the bulk tobacco tradition. Although no measured market-share figure exists, the halt of Richmond production was seen as the end not just of a brand but of a shelf arrangement familiar for decades.
