Featured Oriental tobacco blends are pipe mixtures in which Oriental tobacco is not a supporting player but the main component setting the direction of the taste. These small-leaved, sun-cured tobaccos bring spice, dried fruit, and a light sourness to a blend; because their nicotine content is low, they add scent and complexity rather than body. Enthusiasts traditionally speak of these blends as falling into two branches: those with Latakia and those without.

The Non-Latakia Branch

In this branch, Oriental leaf meets Virginia directly. With no veil of smoke in the way, the leaf's own scent — floral, dusty, at times sour — comes through clearly. Names frequently cited on enthusiast lists in this branch include G.L. Pease Cairo, Butera Royal Vintage Blended Flake, Ashton Pebblecut, Clan Shaw Yorkshire, and A&C Petersen Premier Cru. The style itself is also known by the shorthand "Virginia-Oriental" and is generally regarded as more of a daytime blend.

The Latakia Branch

Blends in which Oriental leaf is joined by Latakia overlap with the categories known as English blend and Balkan blend. The name most often cited in this tradition is Balkan Sobranie Original Mixture, released by Sobranie of London in the first half of the 20th century; according to its tin description, its formula — built on Virginia, Latakia, and Yenidje Oriental leaf — became a benchmark for later generations of blenders.

Other well-known names in this branch include Esoterica Tobacciana Penzance, produced by J.F. Germain & Son on the Isle of Jersey, Squadron Leader and Skiff Mixture signed by Samuel Gawith, Early Morning Pipe carried on under the Peterson name, Mac Baren Presbyterian Mixture, Balkan Sasieni, Dan Tobacco's Midnight Ride, and Ashton Artisan's Blend. G.L. Pease's Ashbury, Caravan, and Quiet Nights blends are also counted in this same family.

Names That Have Vanished

A significant portion of Oriental-forward blends are no longer produced. When the McClelland company ceased operations in early 2018, Oriental No. 12, Oriental No. 14, Bombay Court, and the numbered bulk blends (2020, 2025, 2030, 2045, 2050) dropped off the lists; in its closing announcement, the firm cited its inability to obtain leaf of the quality it required — particularly the aged red Virginia that formed the backbone of its blends. Butera Latakia No. 1, Royal Vintage Latakia No. 2, and G.L. Pease Renaissance are also cited by enthusiast lists as discontinued names widening this gap.

The common cause behind these losses is often not the blend itself but the raw material: when the Oriental leaf of a particular region or a particular year's batch of Latakia runs out, it becomes difficult for a blend carrying the same name to keep its old taste. This is why Oriental blends are considered one of the categories in the tobacco world where year and batch differences are discussed most.
