Perique

A rare tobacco from Louisiana's St. James Parish, pressure-fermented in its own juices inside oak barrels. Its peppery, dried-fruit character has earned it the title "the black pepper of blends."

Perique is one of the rarest and most distinctive tobaccos in the world. It is grown only in St. James Parish, a small stretch of land along the Mississippi River in the U.S. state of Louisiana. Its roots trace back to the tobacco-fermentation traditions of the region's indigenous peoples and to 18th-century French (Acadian) settlers.

Processing

What makes Perique unique is its production method. After harvest, the leaves are partially dried, rolled, and packed into oak barrels under heavy pressure. The tobacco then ferments for months in its own juices, in an oxygen-free environment. During this time the barrels are opened several times so the leaves can be aired out and repacked. At the end of a process that can take up to a year, the result is a leaf that is dark brown-black, moist, and intensely aromatic.

Flavor

Perique's signature is the combination of a peppery, black-pepper-like bite with fermented fruit notes reminiscent of plum, fig, and raisin. On the retrohale, a distinct peppery effect comes through. It is strong in nicotine.

Use

Smoking it on its own is nearly impossible given its intensity, so it is always used as a spice component, in small proportions. Its most classic pairing is with Virginia: the blend family formed by this duo is known as VaPer (Virginia-Perique) and is one of the most beloved categories in the pipe world. Virginia's sweetness and Perique's peppery, fruity depth complement one another.

Because the growing area is so small and the method so labor-intensive, Perique periodically becomes scarce, which has earned it a reputation among pipe tobaccos as a "precious spice."
