Reading a Sandblasted Surface
The texture on a sandblasted pipe stummel isn't random. How the annual rings, grain fibers, and birdseye areas map onto the surface explains why the texture doesn't come out the same everywhere.
Rustication
A method of creating a rough, pitted texture on a pipe bowl and often the shank using hand tools; the classic way to make use of flawed briar and to give a pipe a different grip.

Sandblasting: Circles and Shanks
On deeply sandblasted pipes, it's often noted that the bowl doesn't come out perfectly round and that the shank ends up thinner than the mouthpiece. Both come from the nature of the process and depend on decisions the maker makes ahead of time.
Sanding
The stage after rough shaping in pipe making, where the body and mouthpiece are smoothed with progressively finer sandpaper grits; it takes up the largest share of workshop time.
